We were young... mud is a battlefield...

(from left: My older brother Matt, my cousin Chelsi, me, my cousin Ian)

My cousin Chelsi, whose blog I love to read, recently posted this old photo of me, my brother and cousins. My brothers and I were really blessed to grow up next door (1/2 mile up the road) from our cousins. We spent many, many days playing together and loved growing up together.

Our grandparents gave each of their sons (our fathers) an acre of beautiful property to build a house on when we were kids. (Thank you Grandma & Granddad for giving our families that special gift!) So this is us on the building site, in all of our muddy glory. I just LOVE this photo. It's one of my all time favorites. :) Thanks for posting it Chelsi!

Happy.

Jeff & Kristen were the random winners of my photo contest a few months ago. I was so excited when random.org picked their comment because I loved photographing this family the first time I met them. They are just fun! Their kids are amazing, and you can tell they all love being together! Follow me into these woods... you'll hear laughter...

I'll be sure to give you a peek of their album (another part of what they won) once it's put together!

"I hope you never lose your sense of wonder..."

Yay for the great weather this weekend! We spent our weekend relaxing and seeing a lot of family, which was wonderful. And Sunday afternoon I had two different family photo shoots with the sweetest people. And oh the cute kids!

I had to post at least one or two pics of Tigist before bed, because I just think she's so beautiful and one of the most joyful girls I have ever met. I love photographing Jeff & Kristen's family. They are all so photogenic! And Little Mr. Mihiretu is such a ham and full of character. I love his happy personality. I'll share more from their session soon.

(For those of you into photography:
These were shot at noon on Sunday. The canopy of trees was great for the lighting. There were some extra sunny patches as the clouds went away and I got some sun spots, but for the most part, I loved the lighting. I shot these in manual mode, ISO 250, f/2.0-2.8, about 1/1250 shutter speed, Canon 5d Mark II, 85mm lens. This location is on the way to my gym and every time I drive by it I think, "ooo, I want to shoot there sometime." Thanks Jeff & Kristen for being totally game!)

Friends, Food & Jude...

The kids and I have spent the past two days at my friend Jana's house getting a crash course on gluten-free living, and I'll explain why in a minute. Jana discovered a year ago that she and her daughters are gluten intolerant, so they are on a new gluten-free diet, and she's seen a large improvement in their health! It's great that they've figured this out, since Jana had been praying and searching for answers to their health issues for quiet some time. (Jana is also hypoglycemic like Jude is and has been since childhood too.)

While I was at her house I snapped some photos of her two adorable girls.

(Real quick, because I know so many of you have emailed me or commented that you enjoy receiving the photo info here it is:
I shot these indoors, in Jana's living room while it was hailing outside. :) We had JUST come in from the outdoors because of the hail. The girls were playing on the couch and they were facing the window, which was behind me. I shot these with my 5d Mark II, 50mm lens, manual mode, ISO 500, aperture f/2.0, 1/250 shutter speed. I probably shot pictures for a total of 3 minutes and that was it for the day. The girls were just being so cute and totally themselves.)

So, the reason we've been over there getting a crash course on the gluten-free diet is because Jude tested positive for being gluten intolerant. We got his lab results back just this week. I think this answers a lot of questions for me regarding Jude's body's quirks/health.

The way the lab reading works is that less than 10 units of Intestinal antigliadin IgA antibody is considered normal and above 10 units is considered gluten intolerant. I was tested too, and my lab showed that I was at 8 units, meaning that I'm normal. My friend Jana's lab was 44 units, meaning she's gluten intolerant. Jude's lab said 220 units!

Jude and I had some genetic testing done too. Here's what Jude's genetic test said about his gluten intolerance if you care to read it:
HLA gene analysis reveals that you have two copies of a gene that predisposes to gluten sensitivity (any DQ1, DQ2 not by HLA-DQB1*0201, or DQ3 not by HLA-DQB1*0302). Having two copies of a gluten sensitive gene means that each of your parents and all of your children (if you have them) will possess at least one copy of the gene. Two copies also means there is an even stronger predisposition to gluten sensitivity than having one gene and the resultant immunologic gluten sensitivity may be more severe.)

I've said a few times that I would share about the road we've been down with Jude's blood sugar/growth issues, and this is a great time to share because it's all part of this new discovery.

Feel free to bale at this point or read on. :) I know this is a long blog post!

Some back story...

A year and a half ago was a pretty crazy time in our life. Selah was only 6 months old, I had a small surgery after some abdominal issues, Jude ended up hospitalized with blood sugar as low as 40, and Josh had a career change. Things just seemed nuts to me and I wished that these huge, uncontrollable things weren't happening at one time so that I could simply just enjoy Selah being a baby. At that time we didn't know that Jude was hypoglycemic. It took another 2 trips to the ER with low blood sugar and me reading and putting these obvious clues together to say to the doctors, "Hey, I think he's hypoglycemic" and they agreed. He also seemed to change and become a somewhat more irritable kid and I couldn't figure out why. Jude has also been slowly falling off the growth chart. He is about 1 year behind in growth. His hands have been x-rayed to look at bone growth/development and his bones are 1 year behind where they should be. We've been to lots of dr. appts. and he's had a ton of labs run (poor kid has had his blood drawn too many times). Jude also doesn't really like to eat. You can just tell he doesn't feel great all the time. He's still a happy kid, but I've always felt like I just couldn't put my finger on what was "off"!

So, Jude got an amazing new doctor last year that has tackled his issues straight on and she sent us onto some specialists. Long story short we've started to suspect a gluten intolerance as being a piece of the puzzle and decided to have him tested for it. (In a lot of my reading/searching "gluten" keeps coming up when I'm reading about hypoglycemia, low growth, etc.) My friend Jana strongly encouraged we test Jude because our situation sounded so similar to hers. We finally did and sure enough when we got our lab results back on Tuesday they showed that Jude's very intolerant of gluten. Josh & Selah will be tested next. I'm looking forward to Jude's next appt. with the endocrinologist. I know that this may not be the "fix all" for him, but I believe it will make a huge difference in his life. And I'm so grateful for this information, God's timing and peace, Jana's immense help with this all to help make it an easier transition for us in eliminating wheat from our world, and our family's amazing support. Thank you for all of your prayers too as we've been on the quest to help Jude feel better! :)

Selah the Model :)

My Grandma Joyce is quite the talented woman. She seems to be able to make anything. She sewed these dresses by hand... created them too, without a pattern! So they are truly one of a kind creations. She's opening an Etsy shop called Ivy Cottage Stitches. It's just in the "creating" stages as she's setting up her site and sewing more dresses. They will be for sale soon. She and my Grandpa (papa) live in a cottage on some property and there is ivy all around it and her flower gardens. It's really pretty. So the name of her business is quite fitting. I just picture her sitting in her little cottage, stitching away at these dainty creations. :)

Selah was our model on Easter Sunday so I could get some shots for Grandma's site. Selah was a crack up! She followed instructions quite well and had us all laughing at her cuteness and personality shining through her "poses".

("Selah, fold your hands in your lap.")

("Selah, dance!")

This shot looks eerily like a photo of me from when I was her age.
Jude turned 4 this week and Selah will be 2 in a couple weeks. I always look forward to taking their birthday pictures! I'll do their birthday posts this month.

For those of you who enjoy photography:
We shot these Sunday afternoon during a patch of no rain. It was quite dark out because it was so overcast. I chose to bump up my ISO since Selah's a mover & a shaker and it was so dark.
Shot with my Canon 5d Mark II & 50mm lens (I would have used my 85mm lens if I'd had it with me, but I left it home thinking I wouldn't use it that day for just random family snap shots). ISO 400, aperture f/2.5, shutter speed 1/320, manual mode.

Miss Sophia's turning 3 - Contest Winner Session

Remember my session giveaway contest earlier this year? Little Miss Sophia won that contest and we got to do her session last Saturday morning! It was a beautiful day and we had a lot of fun out in a walnut orchard. She has so much spunk and sweetness all mixed together, I just love photographing her. She even has a lip gloss smile. :) At one point during the shoot her mom said, "Sophia, do the lip gloss smile" and bam, Sophia tilted her head to one side and gave me a perfect smile. It was the cutest thing!! So, you know what I ended up asking her to do most of the rest of the session... :)

"Sophia, how old will you be soon?"

For those of you interested in photography:
I shot these with my 5d Mark II and 50mm lens.
I always shoot in manual mode, and a lot of these were shot at f/2, around 1/1000 or faster. The sun was coming and going from behind the clouds and the lighting was constantly changing.

Just for fun

It feels great to be back on my blog posting again! I love to capture LIFE and the beauty in it.

A few people commented on my blogging absence the past couple weeks. Whenever I disappear from my blog I end up getting and email or phone call from one of my parents saying, "Are you doing ok? You haven't blogged in awhile." :) I guess it is one of my indicators of life getting busy or extra distracting. We have been super busy around here! I can fill in those details on another post.

Today I thought I'd post something just for fun. I often see designers make "mood boards." Is that what they are called? Now that I'm typing this I hope that is right! :) lol. And I've always wondered, if I were to make one, what would I put on it? So last night I took 30 min and made a very simple one without much detail. But if I were to decorate my living room today, this is what I'd pick up. :)

You should try it sometime, it's really fun! I clearly need to add in a little more color and some accessories, but for a first try, I'm inspired to really start slowly giving my living room a face lift. I already have a mirror like the one below, but it's gold and tucked away in my closet. So I think I'll paint it dark gray. Anyway, I would never ever call myself a decorator, but I do love looking at design blogs! So I'll pretend that counts for something. :)
